Field Education

Field Education at Emmanuel

Our mission is to provide Bible-based post-secondary education equipping women and men to think, live, serve and lead as mature Christians in the Church and in all the world.

The practical ministry experience of Field Education is a vital component of our overall training.  Field Education is a practical ministry assignment in some area of church ministry, para-church organization work, community service, or college ministry.

Each academic program has a Field Education component and a designated number of Field Education credits to be earned as part of the program.  One credit hour is given for the satisfactory completion of each Field Education assignment.  Each program requires that a certain number of Field Education placements be done in a local church.

Field Education and Ministry Preparation: FE100AA

This is an introductory course to Field Education at EBC, delineating its purpose and procedure, as well as its preparation for ministry placement. This course is expected to familiarize the students with the process of obtaining Field Education credits and understanding their value in relationship to their academic program and their future goals. Course contents and students’ participation will also assist the students in gaining an understanding of their uniqueness for ministry and learning the skills necessary for finding a ministry position.

Advanced Standing

Advanced Standing comes through practical ministry experience gained before coming to Emmanuel.  It may be achieved through one of two types of experience: transfer credit or previous ministry experience.  Students may be granted up to half of their Field Education credits through Advanced Standing.

Police Check Requirement

Since most of our students do Field Education placements in what is considered “the vulnerable sector” of society, a Police Check is required before a student can begin a Field Education ministry. Each first year student should come to registration with a current Police Check certificate.  You should apply for your police check three weeks before the beginning of the semester as there is sometimes a lengthy wait time for this.  Don’t apply for it too early as most agencies will not accept a Police Check that is more than 3 months old.

Returning students are required to submit an OFFENSE DECLARATION form (attached to application form) provided they have previously submitted a current original police check to the College.

Internships

All students in the B.R.E. Counselling and all B.Th. programs are required to take part in the Internship program. Other B.R.E. students have the option of doing an Internship if they desire it. Internships may be done during the Fall, Winter or Summer Semesters. Students must complete all Field Ed. credits before applying for an Internship. A second Internship may be taken in the place of one free elective.

Internships are more specialized and require a greater time commitment than Field Education. A B.R.E. Internship requires 220 hours of supervised experience, while B.Th. Internships require 330 hours. Internship credits may be earned over the summer months or during the school year.  All Field Education credits must be successfully completed before an Internship can begin.
