In mid August 1994 one of our graduates, Rev. Cam Howie of North Bay, died tragically in a fishing disaster near Grand Bend, Ontario. His two year old son, Josiah, drowned as well.
Cam was a good student, and a hard working pastor. When he graduated, he served for a time as associate to Rev. Mark Chester in North Bay. Then he and Julie moved to Tavistock to begin the work of church planting. Several years later they returned to North Bay, with Cam serving this time as senior pastor of the Lakeshore Evangelical Missionary Church. Over the past number of years, Cam fought a courageous battle with cancer and was undergoing treatment at the time of his death.
Julie attended college as well, and our memories of each of them during their time with us are very precious.
Julie and her three daughters are very much in our prayers as they strive to continue on. How difficult life can be! How we need to uphold those who suffer in our prayers.
In the last few years before his death, Cam served well as a member of the Emmanuel Board of Governors. He was also a valuable participant on the Institutional Planning Committee which coordinated the long range strategy of the College. He was deeply committed to the work and ministry of his alma mater.
Cam loved to fish. This was brought home by several of his close friends at his committal service in St. Catherines. More importantly, he loved to fish for people - and was doing a good job filling the nets wherever he served.
Thank God for the life of this fine Christian servant and brother! His life is a challenge to all of us to love the Lord more fervently, and serve Him faithfully no matter what happens.
