Biblical Studies

 

BI210AA INTERPRETATION AND APPLICATION OF THE BIBLICAL TEXT
An introduction to the basic principles for interpreting the diverse genres in the biblical text. Exegetical concerns include the meaning of the text in its original context, contemporary application, implications for teaching and preaching, and the use of tools and other resources. Prerequisites: Old Testament I & II and New Testament I & II.

BN111AA NEW TESTAMENT I
A brief introduction to the historical, religious, political and cultural background of the New Testament period. A general study of the life and ministry of Christ in the four gospels, and an analysis of the book of Acts, showing the growth and ministry of the early church.

BN223BA LUKE AND ACTS: THE BOOK OF LUKE
A study of the background and introductory materials which inform the interpretation of the Gospel of Luke, an examination of critical synoptic issues, and an exposition of the Gospel narrative with a focus on Luke’s unique historical and theological presentation of the Life and Ministry of Jesus.

BN367AA GENERAL EPISTLES: HEBREWS
An in-depth study of the book of Hebrews with emphasis on introductory materials, analysis and exposition of the book with special attention given to its Old Testament background, first century setting and timeless message for the people of God.


BN341AA GREEK EXEGESIS I
A continuing study of the essentials of New Testament Greek grammar and an introduction to the issues and techniques of Greek exegesis. Includes a review of first-year grammar and an introduction to new grammatical insights through the translation of New Testament texts. The challenges of exegesis will also be considered through lectures, discussions and examination of translated texts. Prerequisite: New Testament Greek II.

BO111AA OLD TESTAMENT I
A survey of Genesis through Esther, including a general introduction to the Old Testament, the canon, and critical theories. Analysis of each book to understand its message and its relationship to the rest of Scripture.

BO225BA POETIC STUDIES: PSALMS
A classification and study of the Psalms from their historical perspective, with emphasis upon their suitability for devotional use.



Theological Studies


BT210AA INTRODUCTION TO THEOLOGY

An introduction to the nature and task of theology along with its basic terms and motifs; and an overview of Christian doctrines including Scripture, God, Christ, the Holy Spirit, humanity, sin and salvation, the Church, and the Second Coming of Christ. Focus also on the interpretation and relevance of Christian doctrines as expressed within the Church tradition and among contemporary theologians. Prerequisites: Old and New Testament I & II.

BT393BA CHRISTIAN DOCTRINES: THE HOLY SPIRIT AND THE CHURCH
Pneumatology and Ecclesiology. An in-depth theological study of these doctrines with special attention given to the problems, biblical teaching, historical development and contemporary relevance. Creeds, documents, and other primary sources will be utilized. Prerequisite: Introduction to Theology or permission of instructor.

An survey of English Literature from the Anglo-Saxon period through the Eighteenth Century.

GH222AA CHRISTIANITY & SOCIETY II
The Renaissance and Reformation. An examination of religion, politics, economics, and changing social structure to increase the student's comprehension of the vitality of the age of the Renaissance and Reformation (1400- 1650).

GL111AA ACADEMIC WRITING
An introduction to academic writing, including the concepts of thesis development, research, argumentation, and editing; and a review of English grammar.

GL131AA INTRODUCTION TO COMMUNICATIONS
An introduction to various theories and practices of communication. Theories of the decision- making process and models for effective communication. Application of theory through practical assignments in research, writing, and public speaking.

GS121AA PSYCHOLOGY
An introduction to the scientific study of behaviour and mental processes. Includes research methods, statistics, biological roots of behaviour, developmental psychology, gender sensation, perception, states of consciousness, learning, memory, thinking and language, intelligence, motivation, emotion, personality, psychological disorders, therapy, health, social influence, and social relations.

GS131AA PSYCHOLOGY AND CULTURE OF YOUTH

Part I of this course focuses on current understanding of the characteristics and challenges of adolescence from the perspective of developmental psychology. Part II focuses on cultural trends among Canadian teenagers, touching on hopes, fears, interests, behaviours and shaping influences. The overall objective will be to develop a better understanding of the nature of adolescence and how to lead young people toward maturity from a biblical perspective.

GS311AA MARRIAGE AND FAMILY
An examination of the functions and structures of marriage and family in contemporary North American society. Topics discussed will include singleness, mate selection, marriage expectations and roles, building a family, parenting, aging, family and work, divorce, remarriage, and various challenges faced by contemporary families. Reflection on these issues, as Christians embedded in North American society, is a component of the course.

 


 

Professional Studies: Christian Ministries

 

CM110AA INTRODUCTION TO YOUTH MINISTRY
A general overview of the history and philosophy of youth ministry. A basic structure for ministering to youth, including goals within the church's ministry, models of organization and resources available.

CM112 AA INTRODUCTION TO LEADERSHIP
An integrated approach to leadership study and practice. Foundational leadership concepts will be discussed through an engagement with biblical principles. This course will also explore a wide variety of leadership elements including vision development, functions of a leader, conflict resolution, ministry lifecycles, leadership styles, delegation and supervision.

CM222AA COUNSELLING SKILLS
An introduction to foundational skills related to effective counselling intervention. These skills include tuning in, active listening, probing, summarizing, responding with empathy, challenging, goal-setting, strategizing and evaluation. An examination of the use of these skills in a variety of setting, including social service agencies and the church. Also a look at the characteristics of an effective helping relationship. This includes a review of professional ethics. Attention is given to understanding counselling skills in light of the Christian faith and Canadian multiculturalism.

CM223AA INTRODUCTION TO WORSHIP AND MUSIC
This course teaches practical skills for leading worship, planning worship, as well as offering a philosophical study of a variety of styles of worship and their historical roots. Attention will be given to the development of a personal philosophy of worship particularly in regards to church music.

CM224AA EQUIPPING LEADERS FOR THE GIFTED CHURCH
An introduction to the ministry of equipping church members for leadership. Special attention will be directed toward understanding the nature of the church, identifying and developing spiritual gifts, the process of spiritual formation, and training leaders.

CM276AA STUDENT LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT
Offered to any student currently holding an SLT position, this course covers the basic leadership concepts relating to the student’s SLT position and future leadership roles. The objectives of this course are achieved through lecture, individual and group projects, reading assignments, sharing, prayer, student presentations and practical experience.

CM312AA PASTORAL SKILLS I

An introduction to the study of pastoral ministry with a focus on the biblical, historical, and contemporary bases and practice of pastoral ministry, the pastor’s call, qualifications, preparation and personal example.

 


 

Professional Studies: Christian Education

 

ED321BA TEACHING FOR LEARNING
Application of principles of teaching and learning to the preparation of a single teaching session and to the planning of a series of learning activities. Discussion of major educational theories and consideration of their relationship to the Christian worldview. A variety of teaching/learning methods are discussed and demonstrated. Curriculum resources are reviewed and evaluated. Enrollment limited. Prerequisite: Oral Communication.

WM111AA INTRODUCTION TO WORLD MISSION
An introduction to the contemporary task of world mission in light of its biblical foundations, historical roots and present challenges, with an emphasis upon the student developing a world Christian perspective. An introduction to basic missiological terms, concepts, and principles.

WM211AA THEOLOGY OF MISSION
A systematic study of a biblical theology of mission based on an examination of the missionary theme in both Old and New Testaments. An introductory discussion of contemporary theologies of mission.

WM221AA MISSIONARY LIFE AND WORK
A practical study of issues, procedures, and problems related to the missionary's life and work

WM352AA CHURCH PLANTING

An in-depth study of new church development involving interaction with current church planting resources and practitioners. Topics include community research, core group development, ministry strategy, church planter traits, and facilities planning.
