Our Mission Emmanuel Bible College equips women and men to think, live, serve and lead in the church and the world.

Lives Changing Lives For almost 70 years, EBC has served the church by changing the lives of students.   Our Faculty and staff dedicate their lives to this goal each and every day.   It is our hope that their lives will in turn change the lives of others all over the world.

Christ Has Been Born, And He Makes All the Difference

“Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Saviour who is Christ the Lord.” Luke 2:10-11

A troubling economy and a looming pandemic dominate the news today. On our campus you can see signs of the times with students struggling to make ends meet, unable to find adequate employment over the summer. You can also see antibacterial dispensers in every building! We live and move in the context of what concerns all the citizens of our country.

I’ve been back at EBC for four months as Interim President and I can tell you that while these headlines don’t escape their attention, our students are much more focussed on their Saviour. In the picture you can see Lois and me with several students. They each have a wonderful testimony, with headlines of a different kind. Our students remember that Christ has been born, and He makes all the difference. Please read all about them below and keep them in your prayers.

In my introductory letter sent just a few weeks ago, I shared with you briefly about EBC’s 70th Anniversary and my 70th birthday party set for April 24th. I hope you will attend this and other anniversary events (see the calendar here). We are praying for a large gathering of Alumni and Friends on April 24th so we can celebrate how blessed we are! Also that day, we will honour Ward Shantz, Edwin Prosser, and Willis Hunking along with their families. These three EBC builders all passed away in recent months.

We continue to work hard to support our students and I know you do too. With Christmas just around the corner, would you consider sending a special gift to support them? As you can imagine, donations have been a litter harder to come by in these difficult economic times. I pray that you would consider a sacrificial gift to help us in our great mission. Now nearly 2/3’s of the way through our budget year, we have raised only 1/3 of what we need to subsidize student tuition. We really need your help.

Christ has been born and He makes all the difference! That’s why we are here. That’s why our students are here. Please make a difference by giving today. Thank you so much and God bless you.

Tom Dow, Interim President

October Donor Letter

Dear Friends

I assumed this role on August first, and am well into things here now. It's good to be back! Some of you know I retired as President in 2001. I have taught courses most semesters since then, so have kept in touch with Emmanuel and the folks who work here. When Dr. Derrick Mueller left office in June, the Board contacted me to see if I would serve as interim while they search for a new President. My wife Lois and I prayed for guidance, and have felt peace about the decision to come back. Pray for us during these momentous days.

Over these weeks, Emmanuel has lost three of her finest and best friends. The founding Principal, later President of the school, Rev. Ward Shantz, and alumnus and former Director of Development, Rev. Willis Hunking, died within days of each other at Emmanuel Village. Rev. C. E. (Ed) Prosser preceded them by just a few weeks. Rev. Prosser was Development Director and teacher at a key period in our history in the early 1960's. What a great contribution these three made to the Kingdom of our Lord! They will be greatly missed by family and friends. Thank God for these giants of the faith, who were all my very close friends and always supported the work of our college. (See below for tributes to these men of God.)

I can hardly believe it but I will celebrate my seventieth birthday this February! Emmanuel and I are the same age, so 2010 will be Emmanuel's seventieth anniversary year as well. We want to have a huge birthday party for the college (and for me!) at graduation the end of April. Everyone is invited, especially you! Put it in your calendar now: April 24, at Bingeman Park, Kitchener. More information will follow.
EBC and I will both be delighted if you can come.

We have a wonderful student body this year! Many have been hit by the economic downturn, so enrollment is down somewhat, and finances will again be a challenge.  This is disappointing especially since we recorded a surplus of approximately $20,000 in our operating budget for 2008-2009. (Please take the time to review the enclosed annual report). We're coming to you again to ask you to dig a little deeper as you are able, and assist us in meeting our total operating fund goal of $328,000 for the year. The college has a grand history of preparing women and men to serve the Saviour in a multitude of ministries worldwide. It's a great work, worthy of your support and loyalty. Thanks for standing with us in days gone by and for your continued commitment as we move forward for the glory and praise of our great God.

Sincerely,

Thomas E. Dow

Rev. Ward M. Shantz - passed away in August 2009, in his 99th year. Ward had served as Emmanuel's founding principal in 1940. He stayed in leadership at the school for many years gradually building the college up until its move to Kitchener, becoming President in 1953. He was a faithful Pastor as well, eventually becoming District Superintendent. Ward also served as Associate Director of Missions for his denomination, visiting mission fields and giving great leadership. The college will always be indebted to the legacy of Ward Shantz.
Rev. Willis J. Hunking - Willis graduated from Emmanuel in its earliest days. He and Marion served in missions in Nigeria for twenty years. They lived and worked among the Nupe tribe, and were greatly beloved by their people. Willis was also engaged in large-scale evangelistic efforts throughout Nigeria, bringing hundreds of churches and leaders together for inspiring conferences which fostered great church growth. Returning to Canada the Hunkings pastured in Kitchener and Elmira. Willis was the Advancement Director of the college for several years and provided excellent leadership in fundraising for the Edna Pridham Library. He passed away at Emmanuel Village in August.
Rev. C. Edwin Prosser - Ed passed away this past summer as well. He, too, was intimately involved in Emmanuel, as a student, and later as Promotion Director, teacher and Dean of men. Through his efforts the college was able to survive through some difficult economic crises. Ed was also an outstanding pastor in several churches in Ontario and Indiana. He served as a beloved District Superintendent, and led camp ministries for EMCC for many years. A host of friends testify to Ed's wonderful Christian influence over the decades.
