Board of Governors Chair Excited About Innovative Teaching

November 22, 2019

The chair of Emmanuel’s Board of Governors is feeling very positive about the innovative teaching methods being developed and utilized by the College.

Peter Mumford, who was invited to become chair in September, led a Board meeting this past Saturday. A chief concern of the meeting was the development of a fresh strategic plan that takes into account some exciting opportunities for the College. Discussion among governors left Mumford feeling encouraged and impressed with the many ways Emmanuel is adapting to meet the needs of today’s church.

For years Emmanuel has been developing innovative ways of teaching and training students. Since 2018 many of the advancements in this area have been done through Open Learning, which focuses on increasing access to education. One such advancement, Live Online, enables students to participate real-time in select on-campus classes through two-way internet streaming.

Mumford has held important roles with the College as it has been opening up these new educational avenues. He has been on the Board of Governors since early 2016, serving as vice-chair for several years before assuming his current position. He brings to the Board a wealth of valuable experience, having had a long and successful career in the veterinary-pharmaceuticals business. This strong business background has enabled Mumford to make significant contributions to the College’s strategic planning.

He is also acutely aware of shifts and changing needs in evangelical Christianity. Mumford has been a follower of Jesus since 1968 and has been involved with evangelical churches in both Canada and the US. For more than two decades he has been a part of the Evangelical Missionary Church of Canada and before that belonged to a Christian & Missionary Alliance congregation. This experience has further equipped Mumford to help Emmanuel identify and explore opportunities for service in the contemporary church.

The College is currently working on further developments in the area of innovative teaching. Follow the Emmanuel News page and social media pages (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) for occasional updates.
