Interview with Joy Borutskie

Are you considering a career in addictions counselling? Do you encounter individuals struggling with addiction in your current line of work? This week, we spoke with Joy Borutskie, who recently finished her coursework for Emmanuel’s Professional Studies Certificate in Addictions Counselling and is now working in the field.

Joy, why did you decide to pursue Emmanuel’s Professional Studies Certificate in Addictions Counselling?

I looked into doing a master’s degree, but as a mature student, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to invest the time and money into doing a master’s. When I found the addictions counselling program, I was really excited because I found out that it could qualify me to do clinical counselling.

What have you been up to since finishing your coursework?

My clinical hours are currently in progress. Toward the end of my coursework, I was hired by Portage Elora, which is a residential rehabilitation facility for teens aged 14 to 18. I’ve been there for about seven months now.

How did the courses at Emmanuel prepare you for working in the field?

When I started the program, I wasn’t working in this field at all. I had no previous experience. The course modules were extremely practical. I still refer back to the texts now that I’m working in the field. I use what I learned all the time. The courses were specifically designed for the work that I do, which I’m so grateful for.

What do you love most about working in the field of addictions counselling?

I love that I get to be invited into the lives of young people who are hurting and trying to find their way. I love helping them find a better way to cope with their lives.

What would you say to someone considering the program?

What they teach in each module is necessary and it’s all very user-friendly. I will be referring to my notes and texts for years. The instructors knew what needed to be taught, and it’s really equipped me for what I do. It’s an excellent program.
